FALCONER – Towards the end of the Section VI Division 2 Track and Field Championships, the public announcer encouraged all senior athletes to stick around for a final ceremonial lap on the all-season surface.
Grade 12 students representing the Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association could make a very clear case that they should be at or near the front of the pack.
Cassidy Allen of Southwestern has won three individual events, including another high pole vault record; sister Kayla won the girls pentathlon; John Swabik of Clymer / Sherman / Panama won the men’s pentathlon; and Oliver Madariaga of Fredonia won two individual events and was a member of the victorious 4 × 400 meter relay to mark a magnificent Wednesday at Bill Race Field.
Devin Austin of Falconer / Cassadaga Valley in the triple jump won another first place and a host of others placed in the top three.
Cassidy Allen, who will join her sister at Akron University in the fall, broke her own New York State Division 2 record in the pole vault (13-foot-7); won the triple jump (38-4) while setting an academic record in stride; and won the 200 meters (25.47).
Kayla Allen broke personal bests in the long jump (4.78 meters) and 800 meters (2: 36.84) for a total of 2,667 points in the pentathlon; Swabik – arguably the CCAA’s best all-around athlete – ran, jumped and worked his way to a personal best 3,527 points in his last school competition before making it to the University of Colorado in a few minutes. month; and the Madariaga linked to SUNY Binghamton ran a 50.02 to break a 30-year school record in the 400-meters; captured on 200 (22.53); and anchored the victorious 1600 stint which also included Alex Field, Ledreth Velez-Olmo and Matt Linder in 3: 29.76.
“The 400 is the event (of Madariaga)”, Fredonia coach Bob Ball said: “And that’s where he always ran. We ended up putting him in the 100, and he took off there and broke a school record of 51 years earlier in the year. He is also the anchor of our relay which has continued to improve, finishing 11 seconds faster than three weeks ago. We knew what we had (in Madariaga), it was just a matter of the other three.
Second in the region were Jordan Svetz, Clymer / Sherman / Panama, pentathlon (2,932 points); the Maple Grove Girl 4 × 800 Relay Team of Christina Peppy, Tori Pavlock, Abby Brunenavs and Ava Crist (10: 00.05); The Boys 4 × 800 Southwest Relay Team of Carter McKotch, Ethan Luce, Nate Lewis and Trenton Shutters (8: 22.53); Jenna Fisher, C / S / P, 100 yards (12.77); Miracle Berakah, southwest, 400 meters (51.12); Shutters, Southwest, 800 meters (2: 00.81); Roan Kelly, Randolph, 3000 meter steeplechase (10: 22.63); Alina Beadle, Silver Creek, shot put (33-8.75); and Tessa Mozzi, Maple Grove, discus (97-8).
Third in the region were Amelia Brown, Chautauqua Lake, 400m hurdles (1: 11.20); Juliana Flick, Silver Creek, 800 yards (2: 27.46); Sydney Smith, Randolph, 2000 steeplechase (8: 10.89); Berakah, Luce, McKotch and Shutters 4 × 400 meter southwest relay team (3: 32.44); Jaiden Huntington, Randolph, disc (121-0); Jillian Rea, Salamanca, shot put (32-5.25); Sam Emiller, Maple Grove, high jump (5-9); and Dontae Hoose, Southwest, shot put (43-9.5).
The large crowd watching from the stands noticed. The competitors too.
As Swaik competed in the high jump portion of the pentathlon, two athletes from Portville sat down on the grass nearby. When Swaik cleared the bar set over 6 feet, one of them said: “I thought I had hops” and, when Swabik passed a few moments later, one of his peers looked at him and said: “You are crazy.”
Swabik stopped, smiled and said: “Thank you.”
It was only fitting that during graduation week, the best of the CCAA passed their final. “exam.”
