Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson Return to ‘American Idol’ – NBC New York


The original “American Idol” returns!

In honor of the singing competition’s landmark 20th season, a number of winners, top competitors and judges return to the stage next week.

Expect appearances from Ruben Studdard, Scotty McCreery, Jordin Sparks, David Cook, Lauren Alaina, Kris Allen, Maddie Poppe, Laine Hardy, Willie Spence, Caleb Lee Hutchinson, Grace Kinstler, Laci Kaye Booth and surprise guests. Plus, original judges Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul return behind the table!

The event is called “The Great Idol Reunion” and will air Monday, May 2 on ABC.

Abdul, Perry and Jackson are ready to pass judgment.

Season two winner Studdard will sing with season six winner Sparks, according to a recent report by Deadline. Finalist Alaina (season 10) is expected to sing with this season’s winner, McCreery.

Season seven winner Cook will be paired with season eight winner Allen; Season 17 winner Hardy and this season’s Top 5 runner-up Booth form a team, and Season 16 winner Poppe will sing with this season’s runner-up Hutchinson. Season 19 contestants Spence and Kinstler will also team up.

“American Idol” originally aired on Fox from 2002 to 2016, spawning winners in Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood and runners-up in Jennifer Hudson and Adam Lambert. ABC revived the series from 2018.

Executive producer Megan Michaels Wolflick told Deadline, “It’s a testament to the incredible legacy of this show that we can celebrate 20 years of ‘American Idol’ in such an extraordinary way. We’re thrilled to welcome back some of our most beloved alumni from over the years to reunite on the ‘Idol’ stage. ‘American Idol’ continues to create superstars as it has since 2002 and bringing back these Idol icons is the perfect way to announce the next generation.
